How to play

Set your stake and press Deal. A full deck of 52 cards is shuffled and the first card is dealt face up.
Call whether the next card will be Higher or Lower. Each button shows where the ladder goes if your call is right.
Every correct call lifts the ladder. The new card becomes the one to call against.
After your first correct call, press Collect at any time to take your stake times the ladder.
A wrong call ends the round with no return.

Later calls use the cards still in the deck: each correct call multiplies the ladder by the number of cards that would settle the call (higher plus lower) divided by the number that make it right. The buttons always show the exact figure before you choose.

Features

Same rank is a push. If the next card has the same rank as the one showing, your call neither wins nor loses: the ladder stays where it was and you call again against the new card.
Skip (once per round): swap the card showing for the next one from the deck without making a call. The ladder does not change.
When no higher card is left, Higher is switched off (and the same for Lower).
The cards of the round are laid out under the table with the call that brought each one.

Good to know

The deck is shuffled fresh for every round, and cards already dealt in the round do not come back.
If no call is possible any more, the round is settled for you: collected at the ladder, or your stake back if there was no correct call yet.
The ladder is shown and paid to two decimal places, rounded down; returns are paid in whole credits or Stamps.
If you leave the page in the middle of a round, it is settled at the ladder at that moment, or your stake comes back if there was no correct call yet.

About Hi-Lo Express

A brass card shoe fires cards onto a track of red and gold light, and the express only moves as fast as your calls. One card is face up. You say whether the next will be higher or lower.

A correct call moves your running multiplier up and the new card becomes the one to beat. Calls that are more likely, such as lower after a king, add only a little; long-shot calls add more. A wrong call ends the round with nothing back.

Collect is the important button. Press it at any point after a correct call and the current amount is yours, ending the round. Every card is dealt from a fresh random draw, so a run of high cards says nothing about the next one. Choose a stopping point you are comfortable with and keep to it.

Like every game at the Bureau, Hi-Lo Express is free to play and runs entirely in your browser. Results come from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, the paytable is published in the dossier, and a return below your stake is shown as what it is: part of the stake back, not a win.
